Yosemite Vintage Half Dome T-Shirt

October 1, 1890. Congress designates Yosemite a national park — the third in the system, following Yellowstone and Sequoia. The act preserves 1,500 square miles of granite cliffs, glacial valleys, and old-growth forest under federal protection, twenty-six years before the National Park Service exists to administer it. The intervening years are managed by U.S. Cavalry detachments stationed at Wawona.

Half Dome is the park's defining landmark — a granite monolith rising 4,737 feet above the valley floor, its iconic flat northwest face the result of glacial action that sheared away half the original dome over the last million years. John Muir, whose 1869 Sierra journals helped build the public case for federal protection, climbed it in 1875 and described it as "the most beautiful and most sublime of all the wonderful Yosemite rocks."
