250 Years of Freedom Eagle T-Shirt

July 4, 1776. Fifty-six men signed a single sheet of parchment and pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to a republic that did not yet exist. Two hundred and fifty years later, it still does.

The eagle on this tee is rendered in the heraldic tradition of the Great Seal of the United States — adopted by the Continental Congress on June 20, 1782, six years after the Declaration. The olive branch in the dexter talon and the bundle of thirteen arrows in the sinister talon are deliberate. The eagle's head turns toward the olive, not the arrows. Charles Thomson, who designed the seal, intended the symbol to read as a republic that prefers peace but is prepared for war. The same posture the country has carried for two and a half centuries.
