USA 250 Tee

December 4, 1872 — the Continental Congress had been gone nearly nine decades when the United States Centennial Commission first started planning the country's hundredth birthday. They built it in Philadelphia, ten million people came through the gates, and a hundred and fifty years later the country is doing it again. This piece marks the second one. Two hundred and fifty years since the thirteen colonies signed their names to the Declaration and committed to a republic that hadn't been tried at scale anywhere on earth.

The design is heritage-monument inscription tradition — the kind of typography you'd find on a Civil War memorial plaque or a courthouse cornerstone, not on commemorative merchandise. Heavy slab serif drawn from 1850s-1870s American letterpress broadsides and 1860s-1890s job-printing wood-type display work. Parallel-line internal hatching on the 250 rendered the way American currency engravers and newspaper illustrators rendered weight and shadow before halftone reproduction made it unnecessary. SEMIQUINCENTENNIAL above, set as a restrained arch with thirteen stars in Civil War regimental flag arrangement. 1776 and 2026 flank the numerals as structural date pair — the heritage-monument convention for marking commemorative spans.

INDEPENDENCE, 1776 sits beneath the hero numerals as date-anchored attribution. Period-authentic, plainspoken, the way the founding generation would have written it on a dedication.
