Lincoln wasn't the main speaker at Gettysburg. The featured orator that day was Edward Everett, who spoke for nearly two hours. Lincoln followed him with about two minutes and fewer than three hundred words — remarks he himself downplayed as a "little speech." It became the Gettysburg Address.

He delivered it on November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the soldiers' cemetery, four months after the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. And the first thing he did was reach back to 1776 — "four score and seven years ago" counts the years to the Declaration, not the Constitution. He framed the war as a test of whether a nation "conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal" could endure, and closed by calling for "a new birth of freedom." Two minutes that tied the founding promise to the work still unfinished. This portrait renders him in the American bank-note engraving tradition — the dignified register of the currency plate — cream on dark, the way his face has appeared on the nation's money for generations.
