By the late 1880s, the American bison had been hunted from an estimated thirty million animals down to roughly twenty-three wild survivors, all of them inside Yellowstone. Every wild bison alive in America today descends from that small herd. The bison on this design isn't a souvenir — it's the survivor.

Yellowstone was signed into existence by President Grant on March 1, 1872 — the world's first national park, three years before any other country had the idea. From 1886 to 1918, before the National Park Service existed, the U.S. Cavalry ran Yellowstone. They built the trail infrastructure, patrolled the boundaries, and protected what was left of the bison herd. The 1930s ranger station signage tradition this design pulls from descends directly from that military-conservation lineage.
