December 16, 1773. A Boston dock worker on the deck of the Dartmouth, hands gripped on a wooden East India Tea Company chest — the moment held just before the chest goes over.

342 chests of East India Company tea destroyed in Boston Harbor that night. The colonists called it the destruction of the tea. The name "Boston Tea Party" wouldn't be in use for another fifty years.

The Sons of Liberty who did the work weren't costumed revolutionaries. They were the working men of Boston — dock laborers, ropewalk hands, tradesmen — doing the act that pushed a tax dispute into a revolution.
